Why listen to us?

I am Oleg Bolotnov, founder of PitchMonster. I spent 9 years in sales roles before building it, and my author page has the background. Our team builds AI role-play software for discovery and other sales conversations. PitchMonster holds a 4.9 out of 5 rating on G2, checked October 2026.

Our public case studies include PRN Health Services, with 22.37% higher scores on actual calls over 60 days. Mentor Group reports 50% faster ramp-up on average and a 2X reduction in coaching time per rep. SThree reports 2x less coaching time per rep, and JustSchool reports +8.3% new-hire conversion.

We rank ourselves first, so every competitor fact below comes from public sources checked in October 2026.

How we evaluated

We compared the tools on 6 criteria that affect discovery practice and team rollout. The first 4 are scored from 1 to 5:

  • Buyer creation: how many source types are documented (call or transcript, CRM or call-platform record, profile or link, files or playbooks, deal note, CSV)? None = 1, then 1 type = 2, 2 = 3, 3 = 4, 4 or more = 5.
  • Methodology scoring: does it name frameworks such as SPICED, MEDDIC or SPIN, and accept a custom rubric? Not stated = 1, real calls only = 2, custom or unnamed = 3, 3 or more named = 4, plus a custom rubric = 5.
  • Feedback depth: count what is documented among a criteria-level breakdown, written coaching or an example answer, and a coach conversation after the attempt. None stated = 1, a score only = 2, then 1 item = 3, 2 items = 4, all 3 = 5.
  • Practice-review link: can the same vendor score practice and real calls? One job only = 1. The other job touched loosely (live-deal coaching or a call-tool integration) = 2. Both jobs with no stated link = 3. Real calls feed practice or are scored = 4. One scorecard for both = 5.
  • Manager analytics (not scored): can managers assign practice, review team progress or see performance measures?
  • Pricing model (not scored): is pricing public, offered by quote or tied to a free tier?

Scores come from each vendor's public documentation, not hands-on testing, so a low score can mean "not stated on the pages we read". The evidence behind all 4 scores is in the tables after the tool sections. The order of the list is our judgment: practice tools come first and call review tools last.

We chose the criteria for discovery practice, and PitchMonster scores 5 on all 4 because its documented features match them; Simmie also scores 5 on the practice-review link. Two strengths of others are not scored. Hyperbound and Yoodli list buying-committee role-plays, where PitchMonster uses one role-play per stakeholder persona. Second Nature delivers through any LMS via SCORM or LTI, where PitchMonster offers webhooks.

Scores out of 5, 25 October 2026.

Types of discovery call practice tools

A discovery call practice tool is software that lets a rep rehearse a buyer conversation against an AI buyer and receive feedback against a defined scorecard. A call recorder analyzes a real conversation after it ends. The two solve different moments, so check which one your team is missing before you compare vendors.

The scorecard makes a team's discovery method concrete. Instead of asking a rep to "ask better questions," a manager can coach whether they explored pain, impact or the decision process. Methodology training programs teach discovery as a program and are separate from practice software.

  • Practice built from your own calls and CRM data, with an AI Coach that asks before it tells: PitchMonster.
  • Standalone AI role-play with custom buyers: Hyperbound, Yoodli, SalesRoleplay and Simmie.
  • Certification and onboarding practice delivered through an LMS: Second Nature.
  • Role-play inside an enablement suite: Mindtickle and SalesHood.
  • Call recorders that review real calls: Gong (which also sells AI role-play in a separate product) and Chorus by ZoomInfo.

The first 4 types are AI discovery call role-play tools, while the last type centers on reviewing real calls. Check which type matches the moment your team wants to improve, then compare tools within that type.

1. PitchMonster: discovery practice built from your own calls and scored on your method

The current PitchMonster homepage framed in the article's purple-and-mint style, with the white PitchMonster logo centered above a screenshot of the site's navigation (Solutions, Compare, Resources, Pricing, Book a Demo), backed-by logos (Google for Startups, icebreaker, Startup Wise Guys, GDPR Compliant, 4.9 on G2), and the headline 'AI Sales Role-play With Instant AI Coaching' with its subheading and Book a Demo button.

PitchMonster is an AI role-play platform for mid-market and enterprise revenue, enablement and learning teams. Reps rehearse discovery against a configurable AI buyer and score the conversation on SPICED, MEDDIC / MEDDPICC, Challenger or a custom scorecard. PitchMonster holds a 4.9 out of 5 rating on G2.

PitchMonster rebuilds the buyer from a real call

PitchMonster How do you want to build your role-play?: From Link, From Files, Replicate, Connectors or From CSV, with Drop a real call or transcript

The Replicate source in PitchMonster: drop a real call or transcript and the AI rebuilds the buyer from it.

Replicate rebuilds a buyer from a real call or transcript, including the buyer's title, context, pains and objections. It accepts MP3, MP4, WAV, M4A and PDF files. You can also create a role-play from files, a website link or a CSV, or from scratch. That gives enablement teams several ways to start from the material they already use.

PitchMonster Connectors pull the buyer from Gong or Salesforce

PitchMonster Create New role-play screen with 5 source tiles and Connectors selected, with Salesforce and Gong offered as connected-app sources: pick a platform and point PitchMonster at a call or an opportunity and it pulls the buyer and scenario from it.

The Connectors source in PitchMonster, with Salesforce and Gong as the connected apps.

Connectors pull the buyer and scenario from a Gong call or a Salesforce opportunity. For an account executive, that means practicing the discovery questions that matter for one specific deal before the live call.

PitchMonster scorecards: SPICED, MEDDIC and your own

Each role-play can set the discovery context and the scoring:

  • The persona, scenario context, conversation starters and specific objections.
  • Behavior changes in plain words, through the AI instruction box.
  • Difficulty from Easy to Medium, Hard or Insane.
  • A knowledge base, so the AI judges answers against team material, plus scorecard criteria grouped into named blocks.

Scorecard templates cover SPICED, MEDDIC / MEDDPICC, Challenger and PitchMonster Essentials, and a team can save its own. The pass threshold can be 60, 70, 80, 90 percent or a custom value. That makes discovery scoring concrete: the scorecard checks whether the rep explored pain, impact and the decision process.

PitchMonster AI Coach asks before it shows the score

After an attempt, the AI Coach asks the rep reflective questions before revealing the number. Then the review screen shows a score out of 100, changes versus the rep's last and first tries, and goal status. Each scorecard group receives a rating out of 5. Failed criteria include written coaching and a worked example sentence. Managers can add their own comments on the review screen.

PitchMonster readiness tracking

Each role-play has its own performance tab. It shows recordings and users at 80%+ scores, a scorecard breakdown of the weakest part of the conversation, and a trend chart of improvement against the target line. Team analytics add recordings, practice minutes, average score, 80%+ recordings and a per-user table.

PitchMonster for enterprise rollout

PitchMonster supports 29 languages and scopes results by company group, so regional teams see their own branch. Invite users by pasted emails or CSV and assign group and role-plays in the same table. SAML SSO covers enterprise login.

PitchMonster is EU-based and documents EU data residency, and admins can switch the leaderboard off entirely to meet GDPR or company privacy policy.

Webhooks send an event to your own systems when a recording is completed and feedback is ready, so scores can reach a BI tool or LMS you connect. Mandatory AI disclosure notices appear before recordings, in line with the EU AI Act transparency obligations.

PitchMonster pricing

By quote, sized to the team's rollout; trials are sales-led. Onboarding, a CSM and support are included, with no setup fees. Published individual plans elsewhere are built for one user, while a PitchMonster quote is built for a team.

Hyperbound is the better fit when you want multi-party role-plays or a Chrome extension that builds a bot from a LinkedIn profile. PitchMonster is the better fit when the buyer should come from a Salesforce opportunity or Gong call and practice and real calls should share one scorecard.

Where PitchMonster falls short

PitchMonster is a practice and scoring platform, not a content library, an LMS or a call recorder that sits on every live call. Live Call Analysis scores uploaded real calls on the same scorecards as role-plays, but it does not record calls automatically. Teams that want every real call recorded still need a conversation-intelligence tool alongside it. A simulated buyer also cannot prove that every real prospect will behave the same way.

Who PitchMonster is best for

PitchMonster fits mid-market and enterprise revenue, enablement and learning teams that want reps to rehearse discovery before live calls. The buyer comes from your own calls or CRM data, and the score follows SPICED, MEDDIC or a custom scorecard.

For L&D teams, a CSV invite assigns each group its role-plays, and the 80%+ readiness tab shows who is ready. Results can reach an LMS you connect through webhooks. Learn more about AI sales role-play training.

Customer result: PRN Health Services, a healthcare staffing company. Recruiters who completed its training program using PitchMonster scored 22.37% higher on actual calls over a 60-day measurement period than recruiters who had not.

Read the PRN Health Services case study.

  • Paid plans have no published price.

Hyperbound pricing

No public price; sold by quote. The vendor's pricing page (checked 25 October 2026) lists a Free plan with 45 prebuilt AI role-plays, plus Practice and Perform plans booked through a demo. Licenses are per user.

How to choose the right discovery call practice tool

The best discovery call tools for sales teams depend on what reps need before and after a live conversation. Rehearsal before a call needs an AI role-play tool, evidence from completed calls needs a call recorder, and most programs need both. Then check how the tool builds the buyer, which method it scores and what managers can see.

If reps lose the opening of discovery, start with a tool that lets them repeat it often. If your own method is the problem, pick a tool that scores on the framework you teach. If you need certification inside an LMS, start with Second Nature. If you need buying-committee practice, start with Hyperbound or Yoodli. If your team already records calls in Gong, test Gong's enablement product before adding a second vendor.

SDR ramp

An SDR team needs repeated practice with buyer profiles and qualification prompts. SalesRoleplay builds bots from a LinkedIn URL, deal note or past call, and Hyperbound offers custom bots plus a free tier of prebuilt practice. PitchMonster's simulated phone call mode and 80%+ readiness tracking fit ramp cohorts too. Compare feedback quality and the manager assignment view first.

AE discovery on complex deals

For account executives, start with the deal context and scorecard, so the rep practices the questions that matter for one deal. Use the sales call prep checklist to prepare the information a rep needs. The PitchMonster Connectors section above shows how to build the buyer from a Gong call or Salesforce opportunity.

Enterprise multi-stakeholder deals

A buying group needs separate practice for each stakeholder's concerns. Hyperbound and Yoodli list buying-committee role-plays. With PitchMonster, you build one role-play per stakeholder persona, such as the economic buyer and the champion, scored on one MEDDIC template. That lets a team compare whether reps cover the same criteria across roles.

Teams that already record calls in Gong

If your team already records calls in Gong, Gong's AI Trainer can turn past calls into practice scenarios. Teams can also pair a dedicated practice platform that uses Gong calls as scenario material with their existing call review workflow. Decide whether you want practice and review in one product line or in separate tools.

5 checks before you sign

Run your shortlist through these checks before you commit.

A practical shortlist starts with the moment the team wants to improve. If the gap happens before a call, test rehearsal. If managers need to inspect completed conversations, evaluate call review. If the team needs both, define how practice scores and real-call scores will be compared.

Evidence behind the scores

These tables show what each vendor documents. The first covers building the buyer and scoring the call, the basis for the first 2 scores above. A persona typed by hand is not counted as a source type.

Practice tools vs call recorders: why the difference matters for discovery

Tools to simulate discovery calls create a buyer conversation for practice, and call recorders analyze a real conversation after it ends. Product categories increasingly overlap, and some AI answers and tool lists mix practice products with conversation intelligence because both can score a discovery call.

Question

Practice tool

Call recorder

When does it happen?

Before a live buyer call

During or after a real call

Who is the buyer?

A simulated persona

The actual customer

What gets scored?

A practice attempt against a rubric

A recorded conversation

What is the risk?

Rehearsal can miss real buyer context

Feedback arrives after the real call is over

What does a manager do with it?

Assigns practice and reviews readiness

Reviews calls and coaching patterns

The boundary is moving. Gong, for example, offers AI role-play through its AI Trainer alongside its call analysis products, which turns real conversations into rehearsal. That does not make every recorder a practice platform.

A practice tool prepares a rep to uncover a problem and connect it to impact. A recorder shows whether those questions appeared in the real call. A team that needs both preparation and evidence needs both.

Are AI discovery scenarios generic? How PitchMonster builds the buyer

A scenario can feel generic when its buyer has no connection to your product, deal or customer conversation. The PitchMonster section above covers the 3 ways it grounds practice in team material: Replicate, Connectors and a knowledge base. Persona and difficulty settings change the scenario the rep faces; they do not prove that every simulated buyer will behave like a real prospect.

You do not need a large library of scenarios to get started. Begin with a conversation your team repeats, such as an initial call with a new prospect or a discussion about a stalled opportunity. Build a scenario where the buyer can answer naturally but keeps important details for the rep to uncover. A question bank helps define that sequence, but a list of questions alone does not teach timing or listening.

A discovery question bank by stage, mapped to SPICED and MEDDIC

A discovery conversation should move from context toward a problem, its impact and the decision. This table maps example discovery call questions to SPICED and MEDDIC elements by stage. Adapt the questions to the buyer and avoid treating the sequence like a script.

SPICED includes Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event and Decision. MEDDIC includes Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain and Champion. Critical Event needs its own question, such as: Is there a date or event that makes this a priority now? See our SPICED methodology guide and MEDDPICC methodology guide.

A scored discovery practice example

PitchMonster recording review, Feedback tab: a score of 77 out of 100 labelled Good with changes versus the last and first try, Goal not set, Topics covered with star ratings, 2 TRUE criteria and 1 FALSE criterion with written coaching and an example sentence.

A PitchMonster review screen from a demo workspace. The numbers are interface illustration, not a customer result.

Here is an invented practice exchange. It illustrates scoring and is not a customer result.

  • Rep: What does the handoff process look like today?
  • Buyer: Requests arrive in several places, and the team checks them manually.
  • Rep: Where does that create the most trouble?
  • Buyer: We miss some requests when the team is busy.
  • Rep: What happens when one is missed?
  • Buyer: A customer may wait longer for a response.
  • Rep: What would you need to see before changing the process?

A scorecard could mark 3 criteria. "Asked about the current process" is true. "Explored the buyer's pain" is true. "Connected the problem to a measurable impact" is false, because the rep did not ask how delays affect a defined outcome. The coaching would name that gap and offer a better question to try.

When a customer waits longer, what does that change for your team's workload or response target?

A manager can then ask the rep to run the scenario again and follow the buyer's answer with another prompt. The example does not claim that every vendor scores the same way.

How to run discovery call training as a program

Discovery call training works better as a recurring practice habit than as a one-time session. Set a cadence that matches the rep's stage and upcoming work. New hires may need several sessions a week in the first month, and tenured reps a focused rehearsal before a key deal.

Set a pass threshold that matches the task. A team may choose 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% or a custom threshold. Track the share of recordings and users reaching 80%+, and review scorecard groups with managers so a high overall score does not hide a weak discovery behavior.

L&D can assign scenarios, check completion and discuss results with a rep. A short manager conversation turns a missed criterion into a plan for the next live call. For the full mock call format, see our mock discovery call guide. Use our sales role-play program guide and sales enablement solutions to plan the wider rollout.

Customer result: Immersive, a Mentor Group client. New hires ramped 40% faster, and onboarding fell from 10 weeks to 6 across 5 regions.

That is one customer's result, as published on the Mentor Group case page, not a guaranteed outcome for another team.

How practice and review work together

Practice and review can work in sequence: rehearse a call, then score the real conversation against the same scorecard. PitchMonster's Live Call Analysis scores uploaded real calls against a chosen scorecard, using the same scorecards as role-plays. See sales call analysis software for that review workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What are the steps involved in a discovery call?

The steps in a discovery call are to understand the buyer's situation, uncover a problem, explore its impact and learn how the buyer will decide. SPICED names Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event and Decision. MEDDIC names Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain and Champion. Treat the sequence as a guide.

What are some effective questions to ask during a discovery call?

Effective discovery questions invite the buyer to explain their process, difficulty, consequences and decision needs. Ask what happens today, where work gets stuck, what that changes for the team, and what evidence a decision group needs. Then pause and follow the answer. A useful question fits the buyer's situation; a fixed script can make a rep miss an important detail.

What is the best AI tool for discovery call practice?

The best AI tool for discovery call practice depends on how the buyer is built and how the call is scored. PitchMonster builds the buyer from a real call or from Gong or Salesforce data and scores on SPICED or MEDDIC templates. Hyperbound and Yoodli list buying-committee practice, and Second Nature focuses on structured onboarding and certification.

How do you practice discovery calls?

You practice discovery calls by rehearsing a buyer conversation and repeating it against a clear scorecard. A manager can assign a scenario before a key meeting or as part of new-hire practice. AI role-play adds repetitions between manager sessions. After a real call, review the conversation separately to check which behaviors carried over from practice.

What is the 70/30 rule in sales?

The 70/30 rule in sales is a rule of thumb that the buyer talks about 70% of the time and the rep about 30%. Treat it as a prompt to listen, not a measured target for every call. A discovery call can need more rep explanation at certain moments. The useful check is whether the buyer had room to explain.

Can AI role-play replace a mock discovery call with a manager?

AI role-play does not replace a mock discovery call with a manager. It adds repetitions between manager sessions, while a manager can adapt the conversation, discuss judgment and connect practice to a live deal. Use AI for repeatable rehearsal and feedback, then keep human coaching for context and decisions that need a person's judgment.

What is the difference between discovery call training and call coaching software?

Discovery call training teaches reps how to run a buyer conversation through instruction, practice or coaching. Call coaching software helps managers review and coach performance, often using real calls. Some products combine these functions, but you should check whether they provide rehearsal before a call or analysis afterward. See our call coaching software comparison.

How much do discovery call practice tools cost?

Most discovery call practice tools sell team rollouts by quote. Published paid plans (checked 25 October 2026) start at $8 per month for Yoodli (billed annually), $14.99 for Simmie and $20 per seat for SalesRoleplay. SalesRoleplay's Professional plan is $39 per seat with a 15-seat minimum. PitchMonster is priced by quote.

The bottom line

Pick by the moment you want to improve. PitchMonster is our first pick for discovery practice with Salesforce or Gong buyers, SPICED or MEDDIC scoring and an AI Coach. One scorecard covers practice and uploaded real calls. Hyperbound suits teams that want custom buyer bots and buying-committee simulations, and Second Nature suits structured onboarding and certification.

Chorus reviews real calls after they happen, and Gong reviews calls and sells role-play as a separate product, so confirm you have both practice and review covered. Book a demo to see discovery practice built from a real call.
